3D-CeraClad: A Printed Ceramic Façade with Built-In Insulation

A research façade system integrates insulation into 3D-printed ceramic modules — a fire-safe, repairable alternative to conventional external insulation.

Most insulated façades are built in layers: insulation boards, adhesive, mesh, render or cladding. 3D-CeraClad, a system developed by Mohamed Abdelaziz as a master's research project, proposes something simpler.

How it works

Each façade module is a 3D-printed ceramic element with insulation integrated inside it. Instead of assembling several layers on site, builders install a single component that provides both the weather-resistant outer skin and the thermal performance.

The advantages claimed

  • Fire safety: ceramic is non-combustible, offering an alternative to conventional external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS).

  • Less waste: additive manufacturing places material only where it's needed.

  • Circularity: modules can be repaired, replaced and recycled individually.

  • Simpler assembly and disassembly, reducing time on site.

Our view

It's still research, not a product you can order today, but it points in the same direction as the ventilated ceramic façades already on the market: ceramic as a complete, long-lasting building envelope rather than a decorative finish.
