Click-Lock Tiles and New Codes: VitrA at Cersaie

At Cersaie in Bologna (21–25 September), VitrA Tiles made the case that the next step for floor and wall surfaces is as much about how a tile is made and fitted as how it looks. Under the banner "The Code", the manufacturer showed three new porcelain collections and two of its own technologies.

Tiles that click together

V-Flex brings Välinge's Ceraloc mechanical locking system to ceramic. Specially profiled edges let the tiles lock into one another, so they stay in place without adhesive. VitrA says fitting is up to five times faster than conventional bonded tiling, with even joints. A single tile can also be lifted and replaced, and the company notes better acoustic comfort. It is aimed at shops, retail chains, showrooms, offices, hotels and schools, which are spaces that get refitted often and can't afford long closures.

Colour you can count on

V-Tone tackles an old problem: small shade differences between production batches, which matter when a project needs more boxes months later. VitrA says it is still rolling V-Tone out across its production lines, so for now it is a promise in progress.

Three new material languages

• Resincode: a cement-resin look with a mineral texture, in warm and cool neutrals plus mint and peach, from 60×60 up to 120×120 cm.

• Geocode: four stone-inspired surfaces (Alba, Imperio, Rio, Merano), including 120×280 cm slabs for walls with almost no joints.

• Metacode: concrete with a patinated metal effect in gold, iron and copper, in 60×120 cm with R10 slip resistance.

Why it matters

Surfaces that go down faster and can be taken up cleanly could change how commercial interiors are fitted out and maintained, and could cut waste when a space is refurbished.
